Local nonprofits who serve people in need during the holidays rely on census data for planning and fundraising. For example, Second Harvest Food Bank uses census information to determine the number of food insecure people living in their 19-county region, including Mecklenburg County.
This helps them track whether they are on target to provide enough meals in each county. Second Harvest also uses census data to determine levels of poverty throughout our region and to write grants, both private and government, to help them feed more people in need.
Second Harvest in turn provides food for more than 700 partner agencies including soup kitchens like Urban Ministries, emergency pantries like Loaves and Fishes, homeless shelters like Uptown Men’s Shelter and Center of Hope, senior programs and low-income daycares.
