Protecting Our Air Quality
The census is important. Census data is used to help protect the air we breathe.
Mecklenburg County Air Quality (MCAQ) uses census data to assess, protect and improve air quality in our region.
MCAQ uses census data to inform environmental justice work and to identify populations that are sensitive to air pollution. Census data is also critical to the air monitoring program planning, design, and assessment of the county’s air monitoring networks.
The number of stations needed to monitor our air is based on the population in the Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is derived from census data. The number of stations impact the funding for monitoring.
Census data also affects permitting funding from the EPA through the Clean Air Act. In all of these ways, census data helps MCAQ address the public health concerns posed by air quality.
